Season Bests Lead Tartans At Slippery Rock's Dave Labor Invitational

(SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team competed in the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock University on Saturday, April 6. The Tartans had numerous top performances against a field of Division II and III athletes. 

Senior sprinter standout Debarati Bhanja (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) broke her own school record in the 200-meter dash which she set just one week ago at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Invitational. Bhanja placed fourth in a time of 25.57. The senior also placed eighth in the 100-meter dash in 12.63. 

Junior Joanna Baranowski (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) had a personal-best time in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.91. Baranowski also placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:07. In the pole vault, junior Michelle Karabin (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) placed third clearing 3.45 meters while Baranowski placed fifth with a mark of 3.15 meters. 

The Tartans' 4 x100-meter team of Claire Yuan (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook), Valerie Reiling (Concord, Mass. / Concord Carlisle Regional), Leah Kendrick (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East), and Bhanji had a season-best performance and took second place in a time of 49.98. 

Senior Tessa Allen (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Bishop Montgomery) took third in the high jump clearing 1.53 meters. Freshman Sami Johnson (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) placed eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.25 meters. Sophomore Alessandra Tully (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) placed seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 36.42 meters.

In the 800-meter run, senior Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J. / Madison) took second in a season-best performance of 2:15.75. Junior Kate Reilly (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton Prep) placed fourth in the 1500-meter run with a personal-best time of 4:48.26 while Reiling placed ninth in the 400-meter race in a season-best performance of 1:01.17.

The Tartans 4 x 400-meter relay of Baranowski, Ciriello, Reilly and Bhanja placed third in a time of 4:09.50.

The Tartans will compete next at both the Bucknell Invitational hosted by Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., on April 13-14 and the Westminster Invitational hosted by Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., on April 13.
