Tartans Open Season at Youngstown Invitational; Giordani Breaks School Record

(YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio) — The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team competed at the Youngstown State University College Invitational hosted on Friday, January 17 in Youngstown, Ohio. The women competed against competitive Division I, II and III runners. 

"I was happy with everyone getting out and competing today. Although it was the first meet of the season, we had many good individual performances today," said head coach Gary Aldrich. 

In her first collegiate track and field meet, freshman Samantha Giordani (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ambridge) broke a five year old record in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.93 and placed 13th overall. "I was hoping to do well today because I've had great training because of my teammates and coaches who've pushed me," said Giordani. The freshman also competed in the 60-meter dash finishing in a time of 8.16. 

Senior Joanna Baranowski (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) broke her personal record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.62. Senior Valerie Collins (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) was first for the Tartans in the women's mile in a time of 5:29. 

Sophomore Taylor Jacobs (Bozeman, Mont. / The Taft School) ran a collegiate personal record in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:27. Junior Valerie Reiling (Concord, Mass. / Concord Carlisle Regional) was first for the Tartans in the 400-meter dash with a time of 63.80. 

Senior Abigail Levine (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) was first for the Tartans in the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 18:38. 

Senior Michelle Karabin (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) placed third in the women's unseeded pole vault clearing 3.52 meters. Sophomore Ashley Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) was second for the Tartans and 21st overall with a height of 3.07 meters. 

The Tartans will compete again tomorrow at the Marietta College Pioneer Open before traveling to Case Western Reserve University for the annual Battle for the Obelisk on Saturday, January 25th.
