Giordani Breaks 60-Meter School Record as Tartans Place Second at Roanoke Invitational Challenge

(SALEM, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team competed at the Roanoke Invitational Challenge on Saturday and placed second in the 13-team field with 105.5 points. Division II Lenoir-Rhyne University won the challenge with 172.5 points.

Junior Samantha Giordani (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ambridge) broke the school record in the 60-meter dash, as she crossed in 7.83 to place third. The junior broke Jacqueline Guevel's record set in 2012 when she finished in 7.92. Giordani also turned in a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.47.

Junior Liz Barre (Ithaca, N.Y. / Taft) won the high jump clearing the bar at a career-best height of 1.63 meters. Barre then placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.18.

Senior Taylor Jacobs (Bozeman, Mont./ The Taft School) and junior Kavya Tummalapalli (Plainsboro, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro High School) finished first and second in the 800-meter run. Jacobs crossed in 2:22.47 and Tummalapalli in 2:24.12.

Freshman Taylor Symonette (Westport, Conn. / Staples) and senior Sami Johnson (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) each recorded third-place showings on Saturday. Symonette threw the shot put 10.97 meters and Johnson recorded a mark of 10.21 meters in the triple jump.

The Tartans will compete next at the Bucknell Tune Up on Friday, February 18 and the Mount Union Tune Up on Saturday, February 19.
