National Champion! Barre Wins Pentathlon at NCAA Indoor Championships

(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) – Senior Liz Barre of the Carnegie Mellon University women's indoor track and field team became the first national indoor track and field champion in program history Friday when she won the pentathlon with a school record 3,837 points at the 2023 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. The championships are being held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, with Birmingham-Southern College serving as the host.

NCAA Performances:

  • The 3,837 points scored for Barre is the second most points scored at a Division III championship meet and the fourth most ever scored in Division III.
  • Barre won the high jump clearing the bar at 1.70 meters and the long jump with a school record leap of 5.69 meters. She placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a school record time of 8.71 seconds and recorded a personal-best throw of 10.66 meters in the shot put to place ninth. She then closed the day with a personal-best time of 2:30.87 in the 800-meter run, placing ninth.
  • Barre's time in the 60-meter hurdles broke Jacqueline Guevel's school record time of 8.76 seconds set in 2012.
  • Barre's jump of 5.69 meters in the long jump topped her previous school record mark of 5.57 meters she set at the University Athletic Association Championships this season.
  • This marks her second straight All-America status in the pentathlon as she placed seventh last season.
  • Senior Samantha Giordani ran in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash and recorded times of 7.76 seconds and 24.96 seconds. Her time in the 200-meter dash placed her 12th while she finished 17th in the 60-meter dash.
