Monahan Breaks Shot Put School Record at Washington and Lee Carnival

(LEXINGTON, VA.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team traveled south to Lexington, Virginia, for the Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival hosted by Washington and Lee University at Foster Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

Top Performances in the Field:

  • Sophomore Katie Monahan broke the school record in the shot put with a toss of 12.44 meters to win the event. She broke her own school record throw of 11.97 meters set last season at the same meet.
  • Sophomore Taylor Symonette placed fifth in the shot with a throw of 10.97 meters.
  • Monahan also turned in two fifth-place showings. She recorded a career-best throw in the hammer with a toss of 42.49 meters and then recorded a throw of 35.23 meters in the discuss.
  • The Tartans placed second and third in the triple jump with freshman Jacqueline Liu recording a mark of 10.82 meters and sophomore Jocelyn Kiefel jumping 10.65 meters.
  • Junior JoJo Huczko cleared the bar at 3.08 meters in the pole vault to place third.

Top Performances on the Track:

  • The 5,000-meter run saw sophomore Alyssa Hoffman win the race with a time of 18:14.15.
  • Senior Kavya Tummalapalli won the 800-meter run with a career-best time of 2:18.88. Liu placed third with senior Mona Yuan crossing fifth with times of 2:19.94 and 2:22.14.
  • The Tartans placed second through fifth in the 1,500-meter run with Tummalapalli leading the way crossing in 4:50.53. Freshmen Margaret Ann Healy finished third in 4:50.87 with Liu and Yuan placing fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 4:51.56 and 4:52.22.
  • Junior Isabella Rhee finished third in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:00.44.
