Tartans Start Season With a 2-2 Mark at the ONU Tournament

(ADA, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University's volleyball team opened its season at the Ohio Northern University Invitational and came away with a 2-2 record following play Saturday.   

The Tartans started the tournament Friday with a 3-1 victory over Defiance before dropping a 3-0 match to No. 12 Heidelberg.  On Saturday, the Tartans played two 3-2 matches losing to Ohio Northern before ending the tournament with a victory over Trine.

In the Tartans' win over Defiance, sophomore Rachel Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) led the way with 11 kills.  Sophomore Senna Parsa (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) recorded nine kills while freshman Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) came away with seven.  Sophomore Emily Wright (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) recorded 22 assists.

Defensively, Parsa tallied seven total blocks with sophomore Olivia Mora (San Antonio, Texas/Saint Mary's Hall) having five block assists and senior Madeline Rosnick (Fallsington, Pa./Pennsbury) adding a block solo and four block assists.  Senior Emily Baddock (Houston, Texas/Dulles) had a team-high 10 digs.

To start the day Saturday, the Cardinal and Gray dropped a hard fought 3-2 match to the host.  In the loss, Parsa recorded a team-high 16 kills while Celentano knocked down 10.  Rosnick led the charge at the net with eight block assists as Celentano added five of her own.  Baddock had 21 digs and Wright dished out 36 assists in the setback.

After dropping two matches the Tartans came up with a 3-2 victory over Trine, winning by scores of 15-25, 25-17, 25-15, 21-25, 15-3.  Miller led the chanrge with 12 kills as Celentano and Rosnick had eight and seven, respectively.  Baddock recorded 15 digs with Wright tallying 23 assists.

The Tartans will be back on the court on Wednesday, September 7, as they entertain Marietta at 7:00 p.m.
