Tartans Start Season With Two Victories

(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team started its 2013 season at the Westminster College "Volley Against Violence" Volleyball Tournament on Friday, August 30.  The Tartans opened with a 3-1 (25-10, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14) win over Wooster before blanking Oberlin 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-14) in the nightcap.  This marks the first 2-0 start to a season for Carnegie Mellon since 2005.

Against Wooster, junior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) and senior Senna Parsa (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) led the attack with 14 and 10 kills, respectively.  Senior Olivia Mora (San Antonio, Texas/Saint Mary's Hall) contributed with nine kills while leading the Tartans at the net with four block assists and one block solo.  Parsa added three block assists and one solo in the win.

Sophomore Emily Lawlis (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) recorded 34 assists and nine digs while freshman Ivana Vlahovic (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Miami Country Day) tallied 10 digs and two service aces. Celentano led the team with three aces.

In the win over Oberlin freshman Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) led the charge with nine kills while hitting .500.  The freshman also recorded two block solos and two block assists.  After recording one service ace against Wooster, Parsa taled three in the win over Oberlin.

The Tartans will continue play in the Westminster College "Volley Against Violence" Volleyball Tournament Saturday.  The Cardinal and Gray will start the day with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Baldwin Wallace before closing the tournament versus the host Titans at 3:00 p.m.
