Tartans Take Care of Bearcats in Three

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team stretched its win streak to five and remains undefeated with a 3-0 win over Saint Vincent College on Tuesday, September 9 in Skibo Gymnasium. Sophomore Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) led the team with 24 assists as the team forced the Bearcats into 23 hitting errors.

The Tartans opened the match with a 25-21 first set win as senior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) and freshman Heather Holton (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) each put down four kills.

The home team then burst out to a 6-0 advantage in the second set before finishing off the Bearcats by a 25-14 score as Holton, Celentano and sophomore Casey Salandra (Carol Steam, Ill./St. Francis) each had two kills during the set.

The third set was played much closer but the Tartans pulled out a 25-22 win behind 10 kills for the set and eight attack errors by the Bearcats.

For the match, Holton led the attack for the Tartans with 10 kills as Celentano finished with nine kills and an attack percentage of .381. Freshman Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) was strong in the middle, finishing with six kills, a hitting percentage of .375, two block solos and one block assist. Sophomore Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) picked up 12 digs and sophomore Ivana Vlahovic (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Miami Country Day) had 10 while Newton and freshman Hannah Wooten (Hughson, Calif./Hughson) each had nine.

The Tartans will next play against Thomas More College and Bethany College on Saturday, September 13 at Bethany, starting at 4:00 p.m.
