Tartans Drop First Matches of Season at Bethany Quad

(BETHANY, W.Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday, September 13 at the Bethany College Quad.  The Tartans lost both by 3-0 scores falling 25-14, 25-12 and 25-21 to Thomas More before losing 25-22, 25-23, and 27-25 in the nightcap to the host Bison of Bethany.

Sophomore Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) paced the Tartans in the setback to the Saints with six kills.  The sophomore added one block solo and two block assists at the net for the Cardinal and Gray.  Defensively, sophomore Ivana Vlahovic (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day) tallied nine digs with fellow sophomore Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) adding eight.  Freshman Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) recorded two block solos and two block assists.

Against Bethany, sophomore Casey Salandra (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis) led the charge with10 kills while sophomore setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) registered 23 assists.  Donohue recorded a season-best six block assists while senior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) tallied four.  Freshman Heather Holton (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) finished the match with one block solo and three block assists.  Higgins collected 21 digs in the setback.

The Tartans will be back on the court on Wednesday, September 17, as they travel to Marietta for a 7:00 p.m. dual match.
