Volleyball Tops Marietta in Four

(MARIETTA, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team traveled to Marietta, Ohio Wednesday, September 17 and came away with a 3-1 victory over the Pioneers.  The Tartans improve to 6-2 on the season while Marietta is now 2-10. The Tartans won the first game by the score of 25-16 then dropped game two 25-23, before winning 25-19 and 25-18 to seal the victory.

 Two Tartans recorded double digit kills with senior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) leading the way with 14.  Freshman Heather Holton (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) ended with 10 kills.  Sophomore setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) along with freshman setter Amanda Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) tallied 18 and 17 assists, respectively. Celentano tied a career-best with four service aces while sophomore Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) recorded a season-best three in the win.

At the net, sophomore Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) tabbed a career-best six block assists. Holton had three block assist while fellow freshman Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) totaled three blocks, one solo and two assists.  Higgins led the Tartans with 19 digs and Thiele added 14.

The Tartans will host the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tournament on Friday and Saturday, September 19-20.  The Tartans first match of the tournament will be at 4:00 p.m. Friday against Mary Washington on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium.
