Tartans Split on Second Day of Home Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team split action on Saturday, September 20 at home during the DoubleTree Invitational. In the first match, the team fell to John Carroll 3-0 before finishing the day with a 3-1 win over La Roche. The Tartans are now 9-3 on the year.

Against John Carroll, the Tartans fell 26-24, 26-21 and 25-23. Freshman Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and senior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) each tallied six kills to lead the offense as sophomore Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) picked up 15 assists. The team was strong at the net again with eight total blocks. Donohue and sophomore Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) each had four block assists. Sophomore Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) led with 21 digs as freshman Hannah Wooten (Hughson, Calif./Hughson) had 13 digs.

In the win over La Roche, the Tartans won the first set 25-19 before falling 25-21 and winning 25-17 and 25-12. Freshman Heather Holton (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) collected 10 kills while hitting .600 as Newton and freshman Amanda Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) each had 14 assists. Higgins led with 10 digs as Holton had nine.

The Tartans will next face DePauw University on Sunday, September 28 at the College of Wooster. The match is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
