Tartans Sweep #20 DePauw and Wooster at Tri-Match

(WOOSTER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team swept two matches 3-0 on Sunday, September 28 at the College of Wooster. The Tartans, now 11-3 on the year, defeated No. 20 DePauw University (13-4) to start the day and then beat the host Fighting Scots, who are now 5-13.

Against the Tigers, the Tartans won the first set 25-19, the second set 25-23 and the third set 25-21. Senior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) picked up 12 of the team's 38 kills, as freshman Heather Holton (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) also had 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .440. Sophomore Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) collected 24 assists while freshman Hannah Wooten (Hughson, Calif./Hughson) and sophomore Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) each had eight digs to lead the defense.

In the second game of the day, the Tartans hit .330 as a team with 41 kills, four service aces and two team blocks, beating the Fighting Scots 25-16, 25-16 and 25-22.

Celentano led the offense with 11 kills while sophomore Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) had eight kills in the middle and Holton had nine from the outside. Newton picked up another 19 assists while freshman setter Amanda Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) had 13 assists. Leading the defensive effort was Higgins with 11 digs while sophomore Ivana Vlahovic (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Miami Country Day) had two service aces and seven digs.

The Tartans will next travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to begin University Athletic Association play on Saturday, October 4. The team opens against the University of Rochester at 2:00 p.m., will face Case Western Reserve University at 4:00 p.m. and then play host and third-ranked Emory University on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
