(CHICAGO, Ill.) - Freshman outside hitter Heather Holton (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) powered the Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team to two wins in University Athletic Association (UAA) play, Saturday, October 18, as the Tartans defeated University of Chicago 3-2 and Brandeis University 3-0. The Tartans now stand at 20-4 on the season and 4-1 in UAA play.
The day started with the Tartans 3-2 win over host Chicago as the Cardinal and Gray led 2-1 before finishing off the fifth set 15-13 for the victory. The Tartans tallied 45 kills, hit .197, and had nine team blocks in the win.
Holton led with 13 kills while senior Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) and freshman Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) each had 11 kills. Sophomore setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) picked up 37 assists while the team collected nine service aces. On defense, Celentano led with 17 digs while Newton and sophomore Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) each had 14 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Ivana Vlahovic (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Miami Country Day) chipped in with 12 digs. At the net, Celentano and freshman Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each had five block assists while Gibbons had four block assists.
In the second match of the day, the Tartans topped Brandeis 25-7, 25-9, 25-18. Holton hit .412 with a career-high 16 kills. Gibbons picked up another seven kills while freshman Shalani Stockton (McAllen, Texas/McAllen Memorial) had a career-high five kills with a hitting percentage of .375. Newton led with 23 assists while freshman Amanda Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) had eight assists. Higgins led the defense with 16 digs while freshman Hannah Wooten (Hughson, Calif./Hughson) picked up nine digs.
The Tartans will finish UAA regular-season play on Sunday with matches against New York University (17-9, 2-3) and No. 7 Washington University (25-4, 4-1) at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. central time, respectively.
