Mueller Leads Tartans Offense in Pair of Season-Opening Victories

(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team opened its 2015 season with a pair of victories over Grove City College and Westminster College on Tuesday, September 1.  Both matches were played on the campus of Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.

Freshman outside hitter Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) turned in a stellar performance in her collegiate debut in helping the Tartans to two 3-0 victories.  Against Grove City the Tartans won 25-15, 25-17, 25-16 before topping the host Titans 25-14, 25-19, 25-19.

Mueller led Carnegie Mellon with a total of 23 kills with 12 coming against Westminster where she ended the match hitting .458.  Fellow freshman Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn.) shined as well in her collegiate debut.  Jurgens totaled 21 kills with a high of 12 in the win over Westminster, as she recorded the Tartans final two points.  Junior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) ended the evening with 68 assists, 32 against Grove City and 36 against Westminster.

Defensively, junior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla.) totaled 36 digs with a high of 23 in the win over Grove City. Freshman Sydney Bauer (Allen, Texas) recorded 10 digs against Grove City before totaling eight against Westminster.  

Carnegie Mellon will return to the court on Saturday and Sunday, September 5-6 as they take part in the Haverford/Swarthmore Invitational Tournament.  The Tartans will start play on Saturday against New Paltz St. at Haverford College at 1:00 p.m.
