No. 25 Volleyball Advances to Semifinals of ECAC South Championship

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team hosted Marymount University Wednesday, November 11, in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Tournament.  The Tartans defeated the Saints 3-1 (29-27, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22) to advance to the semifinals on Saturday.  The 25th-ranked Tartans improve to 28-7 while the Saints end their season with a mark of 18-11.

Three Tartans notched double-digit kills with freshman Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) leading the way with 15.  Classmate Sydney Bauer (Allen, Texas) tabbed 14 while junior Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) had 10.  Junior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) assisted on 52 of the Tartans 57 kills.  

Sophomore Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led the Tartans defense that recorded 18 totaled blocks.  Donohue had a career-high with 12 total blocks and nine block assists.  Also, with a presence at the net was freshmen Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) with four block assists and one solo, Bauer with four block assists, and Gibbons and Jurgens each with three block assists and one block solo.

Junior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) led with 18 digs and Bauer finished with 10.
    
The Tartans will host the semifinals and finals of the ECAC South Championship on Saturday, November 14.  Carnegie Mellon will play Bethany College at a time to be determined after the Bison defeated DeSales, 3-1, Wednesday evening.
