#6 Tartans Sweep Host Eagles in Opening Match of the Eastern University Quad

(ST. DAVIDS, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team, ranked sixth nationally, opened play at the Eastern University Quad with a 3-0 win over the host Eagles Friday night. The Tartans won by the scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-13 to improve to 26-2 while Eastern is now 18-10.

Juniors Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) and Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) led the Tartans with nine kills apiece. Senior Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), who hit .468, ended with six kills. Sophomore Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) handed out 20 assists with junior Amanda Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) adding 10.

At the net, Jurgens along with sophomore Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) tallied a career-best in block assists. Jurgens had eight and Aqui had six along with one block solo. Sophomore Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) kept her double-digit dig streak intact with 10 digs to lead the Tartans. Her streak now stands at 34 matches dating back to last season.

Carnegie Mellon will continue play at the Eastern University Quad on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Cardinal and Gray will play Ithaca College at noon before facing Stevens Institute of Technology at 2:00 p.m.
