Tartans Split UAA Matches at Home

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team split two matches in University Athletic Association (UAA) play at home on Saturday, October 13. The Tartans opened play against ninth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis, falling to the Bears in five sets. The second match of the day pitted the Tartans against Brandeis University, which the Tartans won 3-0. The Tartans are now 15-6 for the year and 4-1 in UAA play.

In the five-set thriller with WashU, the Tartans hit .196 and had seven total blocks. Senior Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downington STEM Academy) led with 16 kills while freshman Carrie Stewart (Victor, N.Y./Victor) hit .300 with 14 kills. Junior Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) was also in double figure kills with 13 from her middle blocker position. The Tartans dropped the first set 25-19 before the second set went in favor of the Bears, 28-26. The third set also took extra points, as the Tartans picked up a 27-25 win. After a fourth set win by the Tartans, 25-21, the match went to the deciding fifth set. The Bears pulled out to a 9-5 lead and finished off the match with a 15-10 win. Stewart had five of her 14 kills in the fifth set.

Junior Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) picked up 47 assists while junior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) led with 27 digs. Foose and senior Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) each had three block assists while junior Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla. / Archbishop McCarthy) had two block solos and two block assists.

Against Brandeis, Jurgens led the offensive attack with eight kills while Mueller and sophomore Jordan Allen (Pearland, Texas / St. Thomas' Episcopal School) each had five kills. Foose picked up another three block assists and Yew led the defense with 11 digs.

The Tartans return to action on Sunday against Case Western Reserve University at 12:00 p.m. and eighth-ranked University of Chicago at 2:00 p.m.
