Carnegie Mellon University Athletics Names Anne Bock Head Volleyball Coach

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Anne Bock has been named the seventh head coach in Carnegie Mellon University Volleyball history. Bock, who has been an assistant coach for the Tartans for the past eight seasons, will assume head coaching duties on February 18. She takes over following the announcement of Kim Kelly's retirement from coaching.

"Anne is the right person at the right time to take the reins of our program," said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. "She has worked alongside Kim Kelly to build the national reputation of our program, and she has an inspiring vision for our future success. Most critically, Anne models important values for our players, and the university community. I couldn't be more excited to work with her to achieve our goals."

Bock was selected for the head coaching position following a national search.

"I would like to thank the search committee and Josh Centor, who tirelessly demonstrates through his support and enthusiasm that volleyball and athletics matter at Carnegie Mellon," Bock said. "To be a head coach at this prestigious university, compete in the UAA, and coach these amazing young women is a dream come true."

Bock's tenure with Carnegie Mellon started in 2011 as a part-time assistant coach. During her eight years alongside Kelly, the Tartans reached four NCAA tournaments and advanced to a pair of ECAC South Championship matches. The Tartans reached the NCAA Tournament each of the past three seasons, including the Sweet 16 this past November.

"Coach Kelly, one of the legendary Division III volleyball coaches, has taught me so much and I will always be grateful to her for this tremendous opportunity," continued Bock. "Kim's volleyball prowess, sacrifice, and hard work have put Carnegie Mellon Volleyball on the map."

Prior to arriving at Carnegie Mellon, Bock served as an assistant coach at Princeton and West Virginia. She was also the head coach at Plum High School and worked with the Pittsburgh Elite Volleyball Club as an assistant coach.

Bock received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1998 from Juniata College, where she played for her father Larry Bock, the all-time collegiate leader in wins. During Bock's four years, Juniata compiled a 159-17 overall record. She was part of four NCAA Division III playoff teams, including three appearances in the final four. Bock was a member of two teams that had national runner-up finishes in 1996 and 1997.

"I know how hard it is to be part of a coach's family – my wife, my daughter and my parents' support and love make this possible," Bock added.

Bock went on to earn her master's degree in coaching education from West Virginia University in 2000 and a master's degree in counselor education from Duquesne University in 2003.
