Tartans Open Season With 3-1 Win Over Denison

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University's volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-16) win over Denison University Friday night. The teams squared off in the first of three matches for the Tartans at the 2019 Spartans Invitational hosted by Case Western Reserve University. The victory marked the first career win for first-year Tartan Head Coach Anne Bock.

Seniors Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa./Parkland).and Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) led the attack on Friday night for the Tartans with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. The 11 kills for Aqui marked a career-high. Classmate Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral)

Freshman Stella Yan (Coppell, Texas/Coppell), in her collegiate debut, tallied five service aces and 18 digs. Junior Diana Balta (Media, Pa./Penncrest) tabbed four service aces.

Defensively, senior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) led with 20 digs followed by Yan and then So-Holloway with 14. At the net, Foose, Aqui and sophomore Vivian Beaudoin (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) all recorded two block assists.

The Tartans will continue play on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. contest against Utica College before playing Kenyon College at 2:00 p.m.
