Tartans Open Home Slate With Shutout of Saint Vincent

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University's volleyball team opened its home season with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-16) victory over the Bearcats of Saint Vincent College Wednesday night on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium. The win moves the Tartans record to 4-0 while the Bearcats are now 3-2.

The Tartans hit .337 on the night including hitting .432 and .526 in set one and three, respective-ly. Sophomore Vivian Beaudoin (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) led the charge with nine kills while hitting .615 for the Cardinal and Gray.

Senior Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) tabbed seven kills while senior Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), junior Diana Balta (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and sophomore Erin Westberg (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) contributed six each.

Senior Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) and freshman Stella Yan (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) both recorded 16 assists. So-Halloway led the charge with three of the Tartans eight service aces, as Foose and Balta each had two and sophomore Liz Jankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) picked up the other for the Tartans in the win.

Balta led the defense with 12 digs and senior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) finished with 11.

The Tartans will head to Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on Friday, September 6 to compete in the ASICS Invitational hosted by Juniata College. The Cardinal and Gray open play Friday against Swarthmore College at 5:00 p.m.
