Tartans Win Twice at Home

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University's volleyball team hosted Hiram College and Southwestern (TX) University on Friday night on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans opened the day with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-12) decision over Hiram before topping Southwestern 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 26-24) in the nightcap. Carnegie Mellon now has an overall record of 19-5.

In the win over Hiram, sophomore Vivian Beaudoin (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) led the charge with 11 kills while hitting .455. Senior Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) ended the match with seven kills and hit .462. The setter tandem of senior Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) and freshman Stella Yan (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) accounted for 28 of the Tartans' 35 assists.

At the net, the Tartans totaled 14 block assists and two block solos with Aqui leading with five block assists. Beaudoin and junior Diana Balta (Media, Pa./Penncrest) each had three block assists while senior Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) added a block solo and two assists. Senior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) recorded 17 digs in the win.

Against Southwestern, the Tartans trailed 24-22 in the third set before taking the last four points of the set to secure their second victory on Friday. Foose hit .545 with six kills, as sophomore Carrie Stewart (Victor, N.Y./Victor) led the team in kills with nine. Beaudoin and Aqui had eight and seven kills, respectively.

The Tartans were once again strong at the net totaling 14 block assists and two solos for the second straight match. Foose led with five block assists while Balta totaled four assists. Aqui recorded a block solo and two assists with Beaudoin tabbing three block assists.

Yew was the Cardinal and Gray's leader with 19 digs. So-Holloway and Balta each had 10 in the win.

The Tartans will host SUNY-Geneseo on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. before entertaining Ohio Wesleyan University at 6:30 p.m.
