Tartans Top #10 NYU and Drop Battle to WashU at UAA Round Robin #3

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play at Emory University with its final two association matches Sunday afternoon. The Tartans started play with a 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-8) victory over 10th-ranked NYU, before dropping a 3-2 (25-18, 26-24, 18-25, 18-25, 15-11) match to Washington University in St. Louis. The Tartans are now 9-10 overall and 4-3 in UAA play.

After dropping the first two sets to NYU, the Tartans took the last three sets to upset the Violets. Sophomore Laura Reichard (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Saint John's School) led the Tartan attack with 14 kills with seniors Carrie Stewart (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and Anna Cao (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) each ending with 12. Steward hit .409for the match.

Junior Stella Yan (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) handed out 43 assists while freshman Abby Chen (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) recorded a season-best five aces. Chen also had 17 digs with Reichard leading the Cardinal and Gray with 18 digs. Yan and Cao ended with 14 and 13, respectively. At the net, Stewart had five block assists and a solo block. Senior Vivian Beaudoin (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills) totaled four block assists and sophomore Jane Dean (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) had three assists and two solo blocks,

Against the Bears, the Tartans fell behind 2-0 before battling back to win sets three and four to force a fifth, but WashU was to strong and took the fifth set 15-11 to win the match. Cao led with 17 kills with Beaudoin recording 11. Cao also had three aces and 13 digs. Yan ended the match with 44 assists.

Beaudoin and Dean each had four block assists with Dean also recording two solo blocks. Stewart finished with three block assists. Chen led the Tartans with 20 digs. Sophomore Mindee Lai (Belmont, Mass. / Belmont) had 14 digs and two aces with Reichard recording 12 digs in the setback.

Carnegie Mellon will head to Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on Friday to start play against York College in the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata College. The match is set for 5:00 p.m.
