Tartans Begin Competition at Mount Union Invitational to Open Season

(ALLIANCE, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team traveled to the Mount Union Invitational for competition beginning on Friday. The team split action on the first night of the invite, with a 3-0 win against Denison and a 3-1 loss against 18th-ranked Calvin.

Inside the Box Score Against Denison

  • The Tartans won with set scores of 25-14, 26-24, and 25-19.
  • The Tartans hit .214, while Denison hit .064.
  • Freshman Katherine Marshall, junior Julianna McFarland and junior Katherine Jackson led the Tartans' offense with 10, 9, and 7 kills, respectively.
  • Overall, the Tartans had eight aces compared to Denison's four. Graduate student Laura Reichard led with three aces.
  • McFarland also had four block assists.
  • Sophomore Neha Tummala had 26 assists, more than all of Denison's players combined.
  • Tummala also led the defense with 11 digs. Senior Abby Chen and Reichard had 10 and 9 digs, respectively.

Inside the Box Score Against Calvin

  • After a 25-21 win in the third set, Calvin beat the Tartans in the fourth set with a close score of 28-26 to seal the win.
  • The Tartans hit .118 compared to Calvin's .151.
  • Junior Elizabeth Schlemmer led the Cardinal and Gray with nine kills. Marshall and Reichard both had eight kills.
  • Tummala had 36 assists out of the Tartans' 39 assists overall.
  • Defensively, Chen led with 23 digs. Schlemmer and Reichard also had 20 and 15 digs, respectively.
