This Week in Tartans History - March 22-28, 2019

With our 2020 seasons cut short, we are honoring our spring athletes with a look back at their many accomplishments during their time as Tartans. We hope you enjoy celebrating these past performances.

Softball

The Tartans hosted the program’s first-ever home contest, splitting two games with Penn State Behrend. It was an eventful day with the games being moved from the team’s designated home field of UPMC All-American Park in Trafford, Pennsylvania, to Seton Hill University’s turf field due to rain leading up to game day.

“The excitement and electricity buzzing through the team in anticipation of our home opener was palpable,” recalls head coach Monica Harrison. “It was a little different than the butterflies of our very first game which took place in Florida during our spring trip. This energy was focused and determined...like we figured some stuff out and now we were ready to handle business. It’s a moment I’ll always remember.”

The Tartans won their first-ever home game by a 9-0 score in five innings behind seven strikeouts from Scotty McGee and 13 hits from the offense. Audrey Pederson led the squad with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate with two RBIs while Megan Hu also knocked in two runs with two hits in three at bats.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

The men’s swimming and diving team placed 16th at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships marking the best team finish since 2010.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Justin Britton winning the Elite 90 winner for highest GPA of male participating athletes
  • Diver Judson Kyle placing 11th on the 3-meter board
  • Richard Dauksher placing 10th in the 1,650-yard freestyle and 12th in the 400-yard IM

Women’s Swimming and Diving

The women’s swimming and diving team placed 30th at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships marking the third straight year points were earned at the championship meet.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Emma Nicklas-Morris placing 12th in the 400-yard IM, 13th in the 200-yard butterfly and 15th in the 200-yard IM
  • Jessica Chau placing ninth in the 200-yard backstroke

“There were a ton of great moments from last year's NCAA's,” said head coach Matt Kinney. “The men's 400 medley relay - definitely one of the highlights with Colin Daniel subbing in for the relay in the 100 breast and splitting an amazing 55.5 - dropping eight-tenths from his already big drops at UAA's. Emma having an incredible 200 fly night swim after a tough two days and going a lifetime best - as well as Jessica Chau going a best to win [honorable mention heat] the 200 backstroke, negative splitting it 1:01/1:00. She and Justin Britton in the 100 back were monsters on their second halves.

“The hats for the men were the focus from other people around the deck....tons of compliments - and I could spot them from anywhere,” Kinney continued. “Oh - and the surprise at Justin winning the Elite 90 award at the banquet.”
