This Week in Tartans History - March 22-28, 2018

With our 2020 seasons cut short, we are honoring our spring athletes with a look back at their many accomplishments during their time as Tartans. We hope you enjoy celebrating these past performances.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

The women’s swimming and diving team placed 15th at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships marking the best team finish in program history.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Emma Nicklas-Morris placing seventh in the 400-yard IM, 13th in the 200-yard IM and 16th in the 200-yard butterfly
  • Mary St. John placing 15th in the 400-yard IM
  • The 400-yard medley relay of Mary Day, Kim Hochstedler, Jessica Li and Emma Nicklas-Morris placing 13th and recording the first relay top 16 finish since 2015
  • Kim Hochstedler placing 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a school record
  • Jessica Chau placing 13th in the 200-yard backstroke

“The women really stepped up as a whole team in 2018,” said head coach Matt Kinney. “With Emma finaling in both IM's for the second straight year. Mary finishing her last 400 IM with an incredible 4:26 morning swim and Honorable Mention All-America finish. The 400 Medley relay was incredible to watch. And Kim finishing her career with that 5th-place 200 Breast – a lifetime best and school record - really capped off an incredible week for the women in general.”

Men’s Swimming and Diving

The men’s swimming and diving team placed 36th at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships with two individuals competing.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Diver Gabe Bamforth placing eighth on the 1-meter board and 13th on the 3-meter board
  • Winston Chu swimming in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events for the first time in his career

“I remember Gabe crushing it on 1 meter - pushing into the top 8 on some monster optional dives in prelims and scoring in the finals for the second year in a row,” said Kinney.

“It was an exciting meet to see Gabe come into his own," add diving coach Alicia Gorman. "He had trained and worked so hard through his junior year. I was very proud as a coach to see his maturity in competition and his hard work pay off at the right time.”

Men’s Golf

The men’s golf team finished 15th at the Wynlakes Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Alabama, at the par 72 Wynlakes Golf & Country Club. Adrian Del Bosque carded six birdies in the final round and fired a four-under par 68 to lead the team, finishing tied for sixth in the field of 88 golfers. Jason Li carded a 77 on the second day after a 75 on the first 18 holes.

Women’s Golf

The women’s golf team was scheduled to host a one-day invitational but it was cancelled due to weather. The week prior was a big moment for the team as it served as a spring board for their eventual trip to the NCAA Championships.

The young Tartan group, which was comprised of one senior, one junior, one sophomore and two freshman in just its fourth year of competition, finished ninth at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate where the field of 23 Division III teams included 12 ranked in the nation’s top 25. The team shot a 948 for the three rounds which was the best three-round score in program history at the time.

"This week was the beginning of a great run for our young program," said head coach Dan Rodgers. "Our finish at the Jekyll Island Collegiate moved us on to the national stage which eventually got us a birth in the National Championship. Our teams have always loved Jekyll, but that year started the real love we have for the island!"

In October of this year, the Tartans crushed that three-round score when they fired a 908 to win the Golfweek Fall Invitational by 19 strokes with Alexis Sudjianto taking medalist honors with a one-over par 217.
