This Week in Tartans History - March 29 - April 4, 2018

With our 2020 seasons cut short, we are honoring our spring athletes with a look back at their many accomplishments during their time as Tartans. We hope you enjoy celebrating these past performances.

Men’s Track and Field

The men’s track and field team hosted its annual quad and won the meet with 221 points after turning in 10 first-place finishes.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Arthur Dzieniszewski leading a sweep in the 800-meter run
  • Evan Yukevich and Liam Walsh finishing first and second, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run
  • Grant Johnson finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles
  • Harry Branch-Shaw and Hunter Hartshorne placing first and second in the steeplechase
  • Fred Dauphin taking second place in the long jump and triple jump
  • Bram Miller winning the shot put while taking second in the discus throw
  • Logan Stahl placing third in the hammer throw

 

Women’s Track and Field

The women’s track and field team hosted its annual quad and won the meet with 221 points after turning in 11 first-place finishes. Debarati Bhanja, a 2019 graduate, broke a 23-year old school record in the 100-meter dash. Bhanja topped Vonquitra Bebee's record set in 1995. Bhanja also won the 200-meter dash, long jump and was part of the winning 4x400 relay team.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Emmalyn Lindsey winning the steeplechase
  • Leah Kendrick winning the 100-meter hurdles followed by Joanna Baranowski
  • Baranowski placing second in the 400-meter hurdles and joining the winning 4x400-meter relay team
  • Valerie Reiling placing second in 400-meter dash and joining the winning 4x400-meter relay team
  • Abigail Levine finishing second in the 3,000-meter run
  • Michelle Karabin finishing third in the pole vault

 

“It was a great day at Gesling Stadium,” said head coach Gary Aldrich. “Both teams performed very well. Winning a combined 21 out of 38 events. It was an excellent pre curser to the rest of the season where the women continued to show their improvements by having one of the best seasons in program history and the men continued to be a major force in the UAA.”

 

Women’s Tennis

The women’s tennis team, then ranked ninth nationally, hosted 15th-ranked Washington and Lee University and defeated the Generals, 6-3.

For the 10th time in 16 matches, the Tartans swept through doubles play, with Courtney Ollis leading the Cardinal and Gray’s top tandem to an 8-2 win for the first point. Following a win at third doubles, the tandem of Vinaya Rao and Melissa Strome won a thrilling 8-6 match at second doubles to secure the three team points heading into singles. The three points secured in singles play for the Tartans all came by way of straight set wins at the third, fifth and sixth spots.

 

Men’s Tennis

The men’s tennis team, then ranked ninth nationally, hosted 29th-ranked Denison University and defeated the Big Red, 7-2, for its 10th win of the season.

The Tartans led 2-1 following doubles play and then collected points at first through fifth singles as Ray Boppana secured the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the third spot.

 

Men’s Golf

The men’s golf team played one round at the 15-team Hershey Cup before the second round was halted following multiple inches of snow falling overnight at the course. The first 18 holes saw Jason Li card an 80 and Jason Folker fire an 83.

 

Women’s Golf

The women’s golf team hosted a one-day invitational on the par 72 course at Longue Vue Club. The Tartans had seven golfers compete in the event with all golfers scoring as individuals. Shanice Lam earned medalist honors with a score of 85 while Sanchi Gupta finished the event with an 89.
