Bio

Alicia Gorman has been part of the Carnegie Mellon University Athletics Department since 2005 as head diving coach and in the summer of 2015 was named Aquatics Director and Facility Manager. Gorman retired from coaching following the 2022-23 season and was named the Assistant Director of Recreational Programs in July 2023.

In addition to overseeing the aquatics program, Gorman will open the athletics facilities in the Cohon Center. She will also have a significant role in managing the new fitness center that opened in the Cohon Center in May 2016.

Gorman has been around the pool since diving throughout her childhood in Tennessee and has 18 years of pool management experience. She began as the assistant pool manager at St. Clair Country Club in 2005 and worked as the pool manager of Cranmoor Townhomes for three years. She has also served as the manager at Glen Creek Tennis Club.

Gorman is a National Swimming Pool Foundation Certified Pool Operator and has her Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator Certification. She is certified through the American Red Cross as a lifeguard and first aid/CPR with AED instructor.

Gorman's tenure as the Carnegie Mellon head diving coach resulted in five diving coach of the year honors and multiple athletes competing on the regional and national stage.

Gorman earned her fifth University Athletic Association (UAA) Diving Coach of the Year award on the men's side following the 2023 season when two divers earned All-UAA honors. Her previous UAA Men's Diving Coach of the Year honor came in 2019 when Gabe Bamforth was the 1-meter champion for the second time in his career. Gorman also mentored Bamforth to the NCAA Championships in four straight seasons where he became the first male diver in program history to earn All-America distinction. In 2019, Bamforth was joined by freshman Judson Kyle at the NCAA meet, each earning a top-16 finish. In 2022, Gorman mentored James Kyle to a fourth-place finish on the 3-meter diving board at the NCAA Championships.

In Gorman's final season leading the divers, the Kyle twins achieved All-America status with James placing fifth on the 3-meter and sixth on the 1-meter while Judson was third on the 3-meter to mark the highest placement for any diver under her leadership. Two women also achieved All-America status with Kelli Kuramoto placing fifth on the 3-meter and sixth on the 1-meter and Emilia Schwallie earning seventh place on the 3-meter.

In total, Gorman's divers earned 30 All-America honors throughout her 19 years of coaching.

Gorman is originally from Knoxville, Tenn. where she graduated from The University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management and a Master of Science degree in human performance and sport studies with a concentration in sport administration. Alicia was a diver at UT for four years and qualified for the SEC Championships three years and the NCAA Zone meet all four years of competition. She was both a springboard and platform diver.

Her coaching background includes age group, high school, camps and collegiate experience. Gorman became the volunteer assistant coach for Tennessee while finishing her master’s degree and at completion became the program director and age group coach for Tennessee Diving, the competitive age group team in Knoxville. While program director at Tennessee, she developed and implemented a high school diving program for all high schools in the greater Knoxville area.
