Carnegie Mellon Student-Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) Raises More Than $3,000 for YWCA Greater Pittsburgh

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University Student-Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) raised more than $3000 to support the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. In a week-long virtual initiative centered around National Girls and Women in Sports Day, student-athletes celebrated by giving back to the Pittsburgh community as well as holding discussions on diversity and inclusion and female participation in sport. The fundraiser was made possible by Student-Athlete coordinators with donations from members of the Carnegie Mellon community.

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh states that they are “a member of a nationally recognized movement with a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all”. In addition to their various services and ongoing advocacy efforts, the organization offers educational, social, economic and programs to those in need. The donations raised by the Carnegie Mellon SAAC community will be put towards the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Early Care Center, STEM programs, and Center for Race & Gender Equity,

In addition to a week-long social media campaign, four current members of Carnegie Mellon SAAC participated in a webinar hosted by The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on Wednesday, February 3rd. NGWSD is a nationally recognized celebration that inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. In the hour-long broadcast, four student-athletes Taylor Jacobs, Liz Jankowski, Divya Seenivasan and Helena Spencer took part in an ongoing conversation led by current YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Vice President of Race and Gender Equity Barbara Johnson. The group shared their experiences and had an enlightening conversation about the role of women in sports and how they can make a difference.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Council consists of representatives from across all of Carnegie Mellon’s 19 Varsity Sports and provides a mechanism for communication and to promote activity between student-athletes, the athletics department, and the campus community.
