Four Athletes Honored as Andrew Carnegie Society Scholars

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Every year beginning in 1975, Carnegie Mellon University has honored a select number of undergraduate seniors as Andrew Carnegie Society (ACS) Scholars. This year, four athletes are included on the list of 40 honorees – Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass. / CRLS) of men's swimming and diving, Seth Henry (Fulton, Md. / Reservoir) of men's basketball, Rory Hubbard (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) of football and Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) of volleyball.

ACS Scholars are undergraduate seniors who embody Carnegie Mellon's high standards of academic excellence, volunteerism, leadership and involvement in student organizations, athletics or the arts. They are selected each year by their deans and department heads to represent their class in service and leadership.

"Rory, Gabe, Lauren and Seth have been leaders during their time as Tartans, and they are all well-deserving of this extraordinary university recognition," said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. "They have all made enormous impacts on our community through their excellence in athletics, academics and service. We are so proud of their accomplishments."

The program was launched in 1975, and has recognized nearly 1,000 students to date. Each scholar receives a monetary award - made possible by the generosity of ACS members - to support their academic and personal growth.

Scholars also work together to present a gift back to the university community. Through this opportunity, the students experience the joy of philanthropy firsthand.

Bamforth is an All-American diver who maintains a 3.69 GPA in civil and environmental engineering. Last year, Bamforth re-set his own school record on the 1-meter board and finished eighth in the nation in that same event and 13th in the nation on the 3-meter board at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Henry is a starting guard on the men’s basketball team who maintains a 3.47 GPA while studying economics. Last season, Henry recording a career-high 32 points against King’s College and pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds against the University of Mary Washington.

Hubbard carries a 3.93 GPA in mechanical engineering and robotics while impressing the nation on the football field. Hubbard is a running back who received All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference honors last season and who has scored two touchdowns this year in three games played. This season, Hubbard returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, marking the second of his career over 90 yards.

Mueller is an All-American volleyball player who holds a 3.51 GPA in civil and environmental engineering. On the court for the Tartans, Mueller has registered 1,238 career kills, making her eighth all-time. Her 2.91 kills per set are also eighth all-time while she is fifth all-time in attack attempts with 3,895. Last season, Mueller was named to the All-Region team for the second time in her career and received All-American Honorable Mention honors to go with a first-team selection for the University Athletic Association. Mueller is currently second on the team in kills with 183 this season and is a captain of the team that is 14-5 and receiving votes in the national rankings poll.
