City of Pittsburgh Declares CMU Tartan Athletics Day

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – On Tuesday, December 6, 2022, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declared it CMU Tartan Athletics Day in the City of Pittsburgh. Members of the athletics administration accepted the proclamation on behalf of department at City Hall.

The Tartans’ fall athletic season marked the first time in program history that all six fall teams qualified for their respective NCAA Championships.

“In a city that takes deep pride in its sports history and championship culture, and has grown exponentially because of the impact of education, it is incredibly exciting to have Carnegie Mellon Athletics recognized for its excellence and contributions in these domains,” said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. “That recognition is a result of the efforts, commitment and passion of every single individual on our team, and I am beyond grateful.”

The football team won its second straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship and advanced to the second round of the 2022 Division III NCAA Football Championship. The team finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record, marking the seventh time in program history that a team has gone undefeated in the regular season. The 11 wins tied the school record for the program's most victories in a season and head coach Ryan Larsen was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Regional Coach of the Year.

The women’s soccer team returned to the sectional semifinal game of the NCAA tournament, marking the third trip for the senior class and the sixth time in nine tournament appearances that the team finished as one of the top 16 teams in the nation. The men’s soccer team returned to the NCAA Championship after posting an 11-4-1 record in the regular season.

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams raced at the 2022 NCAA Championships. The men ran in their eighth straight championship race and placed 11th nationally. It marked the fifth straight appearance for the women and eighth overall. Head coach Tim Connelly was named Mid-Atlantic Men’s Region Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the fourth straight season.

The volleyball team appeared in the NCAA Championship for the eighth time in program history. The Tartans advanced to the second round for the fourth time since 2018.

On the recreation side, Carnegie Mellon won the Fall Frenzy, a month-long virtual-riding tournament through expresso.com where more than 100 other institutions competed. Academically, last spring, 141 student-athletes had 4.0 GPAs and 62 percent had a 3.5 GPA of higher.
