Pull Back the Plaid Curtain on Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach Danny Brandt

Get to know assistant men’s soccer coach Danny Brandt in this addition of "Pull Back the Plaid Curtain!"

1. What drew you to being a coach – why the path to intercollegiate athletics?

My father is a college soccer coach, and at a very young age I would follow him around on the field and in the office. I fell in love with both soccer and the art of coaching right away and never wanted to do anything else.

2. What is your favorite memory about being a coach/employee at Carnegie Mellon?

Our 2-0 home win versus Rochester has to be my favorite memory. Beating a tough conference opponent for the first time in a few years at home was a great feeling and our guys played incredibly. We were unstoppable that night!

3. What is your favorite thing about campus at Carnegie Mellon University?

CMU is in the heart of Pittsburgh, but also has a distinct collegiate feel. The combination of a secluded campus with the energy of the city makes CMU’s campus the best of both worlds.

4. Who has been the most influential person in your career?

The two head coaches I have assisted have been the most influential people in my career. Both Coach Bowman and my father have helped me grow as a coach and a person. My father is the most impressive attacking tactician I have seen and Coach Bowman is the most impressive defensive tactician I have seen. As a young coach, I have been lucky to learn from two esteemed head coaches.

My two NCAA national championships as a player are very special memories for me. The joy and accomplishment my teammates and I felt was unforgettable. I hope to accomplish that as a coach as well. (Photo)

6. If you weren't coaching, what would you see yourself doing?

If I hadn’t gotten into coaching, I would either continue trying to pursue a professional soccer career or would pursue a job with the United States Soccer Federation. I would hope to continue to have a career in soccer even if that were outside of coaching.

7. What is one thing that no one knows about you?

I’m an avid hiker and trail runner. The main reason I live in the north hills of Pittsburgh is my proximity to some of the best trails in Pittsburgh!
