ECAC Announces Football Players of the Month for September

DANBURY, Conn. (pacathletics.org)--Three players from Carnegie Mellon University were recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Wednesday afternoon with Division III South Football awards for their September performances.

Senior linebacker Quinn Gaughan (Elmhurst, Ill. | York Community) claimed ECAC Division III South Defensive Player of the Month honors. Sophomore kicker Brandon Nguyen (Maitland, Fla. | Lake Highland Prep.) was named the Division III South Special Teams Player of the Month while freshman punter Casey Jaeb (San Jose, Calif. | Bellarmine Prep.) collected ECAC Division III Rookie of the Month honors.

Gaughan was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Tartans' 20-13 upset win over No. 12 Washington & Jefferson College on Sept. 21. In the win, Gaughan recorded a career-high 17 stops (9 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, registered his first career interception and added a fumble recovery in the third quarter. Gaughan totaled 37 tackles (21 solo) during the month with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.   

Nguyen was named the PAC Special Team Player of the Week and secured a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week following his outing against W&J. In the win, the sophomore hit both of his field goal attempts, which included a career-best 46-yarder. He has hit all six of his field goal attempts this season while converting 13-of-14 extra-point tries.

Jaeb has played a major role as a member of the Tartans’ special teams unit this fall. The freshman has averaged 38.4 yards per punt while placing eight inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. He has recorded four punts of 50 yards or more, include a career-best 56-yarder in the win over W&J. Jaeb has been named the PAC Rookie of the Week twice this season. 

Carnegie Mellon (4-0, 3-0 PAC) will head to Grove City College (2-2, 1-2 PAC) Saturday. Kickoff at Robert E. Thorn Field is slated for 2 p.m.
