#18 Tartans Extend Streak to 16 Straight with 30-12 Senior Day Win Over Saint Vincent

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University football team, ranked 18th nationally, hosted the Bearcats of Saint Vincent College on Saturday. The Tartans came away with a 30-12 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory on Homecoming and Senior Day.

How it Happened

  • On the Tartans first possession of the game, graduate student Cole Hanna connected on a 30-yard field goal to give Carnegie Mellon the early 3-0 lead.
  • On Saint Vincent's next possession, sophomore Nolan Pitsenberger Bearcat signal caller Brady Walker. Three plays later junior Ben Mills found senior Kris Hughes an a 20-yard touchdown strike which made the score 10-0 with 8:17 to play in the first quarter.
  • Before the end of the first quarter, Mills and Highes connected again on a 9-yard touchdown and the score was 17-0.
  • Saint Vincent got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter when Walker connected with Ryan Whitman on a 6-yard touchdown. The point after was blocked and the score remained 17-6.
  • Hanna tacked on a 33-yard field goal to make the score 20-6 at the break.
  • The only scoring in the third quarter once again came off the foot of Hanna when he booted a 28-yard field goal to extend the score to 23-6.
  • Carnegie Mellon then made it 30-6 with 10:14 to play when freshman Joey McGinnis IV ran it in from two yards out.
  • The Bearcats added a late touchdown on a 1-yard run by Max Pisula to close the scoring at 30-12 after the two-point attempt failed.

Stats

  • Carnegie Mellon recorded six interceptions while Saint Vincent was able to force just one Tartan turnover.
  • The Tartans outgained the Bearcats 366-174.
  • Junior Adrian Williams had three interceptions and recorded 52 yards in returns. The junior also had two additional pass breakups and four total tackles, three solo.
  • Junior Robert Coury led the Tartans with six total tackles, four solo. He had 1.0 sacks for a loss of 10 yards and added a pass breakup.
  • Mills ended the day completing 21-of-39 for 195 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Hughes recorded a career-high nine receptions for 65 yards and two scores to lead the Cardinal and Gray receivers.
  • Sophomore Ben Condemi also tabbed a career-best in receptions with six for 36 yards.
  • Junior Tre Vasiliadis led the Tartan ground attack with 95 yards on 20 carries.

Game Notes

  • The Tartans extend their winning streak to 16 straight games, the longest active in the NCAA across all divisions.
  • The Tartans' 9-0 start is the best start for the program since 2006 when the Cardinal and Gray went 10-0 in the regular season. It marks the fifth time in program history that a Tartan team has started the season with nine straight wins.
  • The Tartans have now won 26 straight games when leading after three quarters of play.
  • Hughes now has 25 touchdown receptions for his career and moved into a tie for first with John Prather (2014-2017).
  • Williams' three interceptions tie the school record for most picks in a single game. In 2005, Aaron Lewis and Jon Menhart each had three at Colorado College.
  • The six team interceptions is the most for the Tartans since recording a school record seven at Colorado College in 2005.
  • Carnegie Mellon now has 20 interceptions on the season, ranking tops in Division III.
  • The Tartans have now won 11 straight contests when holding their opponent to under 300 yards of total offense.
  • The 30 yards rushing by Saint Vincent marks the seventh opponent this season that the Tartans have held under 100 yards on the ground and fourth under 50 yards.
