When his mother was diagnosed with cancer during his sophomore year of college, Evan Gelacek knew he needed to get closer to home. After two years at Swarthmore College, Gelacek transferred to Carnegie Mellon, where he became a standout on the basketball court and in the classroom.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s basketball team had four players named to the All-University Athletic Association (UAA) Men’s Basketball Team by the league’s coaches when the Association announced its postseason All-Star teams Wednesday, February 29. Senior John Duhring (Round Hill, Va./Saint Maria Goretti) found a spot on the Association’s second team, as senior Joe Kromka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) along with sophomores Christian Manoli (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) and Rashaun Riley (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) received honorable mention status.

Senior Joe Kromka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) had a career game to finish his career as a Tartan, leading the Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team to a 72-69 come-from-behind win at home against Case Western Reserve University. The Tartans finish the year with a 9-16 overall mark and 4-10 record in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Spartans end the year with a 10-15 and 2-12 mark.

A late second-half run by the Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team was not quite enough as the University of Rochester Yellowjackets stole a road win in University Athletic Association action Sunday. The Yellowjackets used an 85% shooting performance from the free throw line to take down the Tartans 81-74.

Sophomore Sean Brophy’s (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) three-point basket with 0.6 seconds remaining in the contest lifted the Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team to an 82-79 upset victory over #18 Emory University. The win on the Skibo Gymnasium hardwood brings the Tartans’ record to 8-15 and 3-9 in University Athletic Association play. The Eagles are now 18-5, 7-5.

In overtime, the Tartans dropped a 77-75 decision to the Maroons, falling to 7-14, 2-8 while Chicago is now 12-9, 5-5.

An off-balance shot by Tyrone Hughes found its way thru the net for the Judges for the 77-76 win in Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans are now 7-13 overall and 2-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while Brandeis moves to 12-8 and 6-3.

In the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest, the Violets defeated the Tartans 88-76 to drop Carnegie Mellon’s record to 7-12, 2-6 while New York improves to 16-2, 6-2.

Two Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball seniors, John Duhring (Round Hill, Va./St. Maria Goretti) and Joe Kromka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway), have been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-District Team Thursday, February 2. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or better.
