Tartans End Non-Conference Play with a 67-61 Victory Over Bethany

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team finished its non-conference schedule with a 67-61 victory over the Bison of Bethany College Monday. January 7.  The win on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium puts the Tartans at 3-9 while the Bison are now 11-4.

Carnegie Mellon fell behind early, 15-11, until a 7-0 run landed them an 18-15 lead with 9:23 to play in the first half.  During the stretch, senior Andre Moore's (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) trey gave the Tartans the lead, as the home team led 34-27 into the break.

Carnegie Mellon's lead was erased five minutes into the second half.  Bethany started the second stanza on a 12-4 run and took its lead after two made foul shots Brady Pacific.  The Bison didn't hold the lead for long as Moore converted a layup a minute later to give the home team the lead back, one they never relinquished.  

The Tartans led by as many as 12 on two occasions and held on for the 67-61 victory.  After Bethany turned 13 first half offensive rebounds into 12 second chance points, the Tartans held the Bison to just five second chance points in the second frame.  

Moore led the Tartans with 15 points while juniors Rashaun Riley (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) and Rob Mohen (Stamford, Conn./Regis (NY)) also scored in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.  For the second straight contest, Moore dished out a career-high five assists while he also tied a career-high with two blocks.  Mohen led the Tartans on the glass with a career-high eight rebounds

Pacific led the Bison with 16 points.  Nick Wilcox recorded a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds while James Barton ended the game with 10 points.

The Tartans will next face Brandeis University on Friday, January 11 in Waltham, Mass. at 8:00 p.m.
