Moore Records First Career Double-Double as Tartans Fall 59-53 at NYU

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team dropped a 59-53 contest at New York University on Sunday, January 13.  Senior Andre Moore (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded his first career double-double in the University Athletic Association (UAA) matchup while the Tartans fall to 3-11, 0-3 and NYU is now 12-2, 2-1.

New York opened the game on a 9-4 run during the first seven minutes as the Tartans shot 1-10 from the field during the stretch.  Free throws kept Carnegie Mellon close and the Tartans took their first lead of the game (26-25) when sophomore Kevin Stursberg (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Jacksonville Episcopal) converted two from the charity stripe with 2:45 to play in the first stanza.

Over the rest of the half the lead changed hands twice before the teams went into the locker room deadlocked at 31-31.  The Tartans made their first 14 fouls shots and ended the half 15-16 from the line while NYU was 8-10.

Junior Asad Meghani (Dallas, Texas/The Greenhill School) gave the Tartans a 34-33 lead with a trey to start the second half.  Following Meghani's long ball, NYU scored 13 straight points claiming a 46-34 edge. Carnegie Mellon's trouble continued from the field as they were held without a field goal over a 14 minute stretch and the Violets built a 50-35 lead.

The Tartans did not go down without a fight, using a 15-4 run to cut the lead to 54-50 with 1:23 to play off a made three-pointer by junior Phil Einwag (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin).  Carnegie pulled within three (56-53) following an and-one by junior Rob Mohen (Stamford, Conn./Regis (NY)), but that was the last points the Tartans scored as NYU held on for the 59-53 victory.

Moore finished the game with 10 points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds.  Sophomore Seth Cordts (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) ended with nine points while making 5-6 from the foul line.  The Tartans finished shooting 17-20 from the line and NYU shot 13-19.

Devin Karch led the Violets with 20 points and Carl Yaffe ended with 15 points for NYU.

The Tartans will continue UAA play on Friday, January 18 as they entertain the University of Rochester.  Tip is set for 8:00 p.m. against the fourth-ranked Yellowjackets.
