Balanced Scoring Helps Tartans Roll Rochester

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) -  Sunday afternoon the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans defeated the University of Rochester 73-62 in men's basketball action in their second match-up during University Athletic Association (UAA) play. With the win, the Tartans sweep the season series with Rochester and even their record at 11-11 and are 4-7 in the UAA, as the Yellowjackets fall to 8-14 and 2-9.

Junior Seth Cordts (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) led the Tartans recording 19 points, with 16 scored in the second half.  Cordts also tied his career-high of three steals on the defensive front and hit 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

Senior Christian Manoli (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) scored the first five points for the Tartans hitting a three-point field goal and banking in a layup to put the Tartans up 5-2 right off the tip.

Hitting a trio of threes to put the Tartans up 14-4, freshman Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) put up great numbers against Rochester for the second time this season.  Serbin recorded his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, 10 of which came from the defensive glass.

Senior Rashaun Riley (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) hit a pair of threes to take the Tartans up 33-22 with about four minutes left in the first half.

The Yellowjackets played tight defense and fought back on offense to keep the game within reach, closing the first half on an 11-3 run to trail by seven, 39-32 after a Tartan layup by senior Asad Meghani (Carrollton, Texas/Greenhill School) ended the half.

The Tartans opened the second half with another pair of three-point shots, giving the home squad 10 for the game and a shooting percentage of 62.5% to that point. The first shot by Cordts and the second from Meghani, who has now hit a three-pointer in his last 53 games. The set of threes put the Tartans in control of the game as they used the momentum to increase their lead to 15 points, 57-42 with 13 minutes to play.

With a steal and breakaway layup from Cordts the Tartans increased the gap to 61-47 and never let the Yellowjackets get closer than seven points by scoring 10 of their final 12 points from the free throw line.

Senior Rob Mohen (Stamford, Conn./Regis (NYC)) also tallied double figures in points for the Tartans with 13 while pulling down seven from the glass.

The Tartans will be on the road next weekend for their last UAA doubleheader weekend.  They will play the University of Chicago on Friday, February 21 and the Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, February 23.
