Short Feature with Men's Basketball Rising Junior Zach Howarth

Rising junior Zach Howarth, a business major from Freehold, New Jersey, answers a few questions about student life at Carnegie Mellon, his internship experience, what he's excited for this semester, why he chose his major, and what he likes about Pittsburgh.

1. What do you enjoy about campus life?

I have enjoyed the inclusive nature of the CMU campus. CMU allows you to be yourself and feel at home while on campus, without any fear of not being accepted. The campus accepts all people, regardless of differences, and it has been something I have appreciated since coming onto campus.

2. What do you get involved in outside of basketball?

I am involved primarily with the Tepper Finance Group outside of my spot. I am a member of both the Tartan Student Fund and Sales and Trading Academy. Both clubs have allowed me to explore my interests regarding my business major and career aspirations.

3. Tell us about your internship experience.

I currently have an internship with Rosso Financial Group in Sea Girt, N.J., as a summer financial analyst. I work directly with our senior portfolio manager to analyze markets and assist in increasing portfolio exposure, as well as decreasing risk.

4. What are your summer plans?

Besides working, I plan on spending my summer with friends and family, as well as playing in various men's leagues and working out to prepare for the upcoming season.

5. What are you excited about this semester?

I am excited about taking more classes focused on my major, as well the opportunity to work towards gaining a different full time internship next summer. I'm also looking forward to spending another year off campus in Pittsburgh.

6. Why did you select your course of study – what class have you enjoyed the most?

I am currently pursuing a finance concertation as part of the business administration major. My favorite class has been "Presidential Politics: So, You want to be President of the US." The class dove into all aspects of the American presidency position, including many of the unknown elements of how presidents have been able to win the election.

7. What class would you recommended someone take?

I would recommend social psychology as a class to take. It's an extremely relevant course with many lessons related to everyday life. I have become more knowledgeable about the social interactions of human society, while also being able to apply many of the lessons to numerous experiences in my life so far.

8. What have you enjoyed about living in Pittsburgh?

I have enjoyed the authenticity and pride of Pittsburgh more than any of its other qualities. It's a city that is very proud of its accomplishments and its history, which has only made being a part of it that much better.

9. What has been a memorable moment so far during your time on the team?

Two memorable moments, although fairly similar story lines, I will always have are the last two senior days I have been apart. Being able to win the last two years on those days and send the seniors off in the right way were great feelings for the team. The seniors deserved a win for the last four years of hard work they had put into this program and being a part of those wins has been a great experience.
