Two Tartans Tabbed Double-Doubles in Setback at Allegheny

(MEADVILLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Allegheny College for a weekday contest with the Gators on Wednesday and fell by the score of 82-78 despite two Tartans recording double-doubles. The Tartans are now 1-5 as the Gators improve to 4-1.

Carnegie Mellon shot 43.3% (29-67) from the floor and held a 44-40 advantage on the boards were led by junior Zach Howarth's (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) season-high 24 points. Howarth connected on 8-of-17 from the floor and was perfect from the charity stripe making all eight of his attempts. Seniors Patrick Ehland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Seth Henry (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) both recorded double-doubles. It marked the fourth of Ehland's career, as he finished with season-bests of 15 points and 11 rebounds coming off the bench. Henry scored 11 points and grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season.

Five Gators scored in double figures with Jordan Rawls leading with 22 points. Brian Roberts Jr. had 16, Jordan Greynolds 14, Caden Hinckley 12 and Billy Urso scored 11. Allegheny finished the game shooting 42.5% (31-73) from the floor.

The first half saw 11 lead changes and ended with Allegheny scoring seven of the last 10 points over the last three minutes to claim a 38-35 lead at the break. Carnegie Mellon took its largest lead of the frame when junior Cooper Williams (Meriden, N.H./Kimball Union Academy) drained a triple to make the score 15-11 at the 13-minute mark. With five minutes on the clock, Allegheny led 31-26 after it used an 8-2 run, but the Tartans' responded with six straight points to hold a 32-31 before the Gators closed the half with a 38-35 lead.

Allegheny held the lead for the first 11 minutes of the second half until the Tartans scored eight straight points and took a 62-61 lead on a Howarth layup with 8:54 to play. A traditional three-point play by Allegheny's Roberts three minutes later gave the home team a 67-64 advantage, one that was never lost.

Carnegie Mellon returns to the hardwood on Saturday, December 1 with a 3:00 p.m. game at Bethany College.
