Men’s Basketball Extends Streak to Six with an 81-67 Win Over NYU

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued University Athletic Association play on Sunday and won its sixth straight game with an 81-67 victory over New York University. The win improves Carnegie Mellon's record to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in UAA play. NYU is now 6-8, 0-3.

Carnegie Mellon ended the game shooting 41.9% from the field after converting 14-of-24 (58.3%) in the second half. NYU finished the day shooting 43.9%. The Tartans also shot 47.1% from behind the arc, converting 8-of-17. The home team has now out assisted their opponent in all eight wins this year, as they held a 17-8 advantage over the Violets.

Senior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) led four Tartans in double figures with a game-high 22 points. The senior also added a game-high nine rebounds. Junior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) ended with 18 points and seven rebounds. Junior Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) and sophomore Zach Watson (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) each scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Junior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) handed out six assists.

Carnegie Mellon started the game on an 8-0 run to see NYU score the next eight to knot the score with 14:33 to play in the first half. Back-to-back triples by Henry and McNeil gave the Tartans a 14-6 edge and Carnegie Mellon would then lead by as many as nine points on two different occasions before going into the locker room with a 34-28 advantage.

A traditional three-point play by Watson followed by a three-point basket by sophomore Ethan Miller (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) gave the home team a 47-33 lead with 16:43 to play in the game. The Tartans continued to control the contest, as their lead never dipped below eight points the rest of the game.

Carnegie Mellon will begin a four-game UAA road trip on Friday, January 18 with an 8:00 p.m. tip at the University of Rochester.
