Hot Start by Eagles Drops Tartans, 116-100

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting team in Emory University on Sunday, January 20 in a back-and-forth affair that finished with the Eagles holding home court, 116-100. The Tartans and Eagles are now both 3-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Tartans sit at 8-8 overall with the Eagles at 12-4.

Senior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md. / Reservoir) led the Tartans with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Junior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J. / St. John Vianney) scored 16 to continue its string of double-digit games, now at 16 for the year, with sophomore Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla. / Trinity Prep) contributing 14 points. Junior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) scored eight points and dished out eight assists for the second time this season.

Emory was 12-of-17 and 6-of-9 from long range when building a 30-14 lead throughout the first seven-plus minutes of the game. That gap grew to 28 before the half ended with the Eagles leading 68-42. The Tartans shot 41.7% from the floor for the half but Emory was nearly unstoppable making 62.8% from the floor, including 10-of-17 (58.8%) from behind the arc.

Carnegie Mellon reached 100 points for the first time this season, connecting on 64.7% of its attempts in the second half. The 100th point was scored by sophomore Joey Krempa (Linden, N.J. / Linden) when he pulled up from the top of the key for a triple with 37 seconds to play. The Eagles surpassed the triple-digit mark for the fourth time this season and are now averaging 93.8 points per game overall and 95.4 points per game in UAA play.

The Eagles were led by sophomore Matthew Schner's 30 points with sophomore Romin Williams scoring 23 with seven assists.

Carnegie Mellon will remain on the road for its next contest when it plays at Washington University in St. Louis (10-6, 3-2) on Friday, January 25 at 8:00 p.m. CT.
