Men’s Basketball Earns Team Academic Honors by NABC for Ninth Straight Season; Eight Individuals Honored

The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team was recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) when the committee on academics announced the annual Team Academic Excellence Awards for 2020-21. The Tartans have been recognized each year since the program started nine season ago.
Miller Named CoSIDA Academic All-District for Men’s Basketball

Carnegie Mellon University senior Ethan Miller (King of Prussia, Pa. / Upper Merion) was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men's Basketball Team, as announced by the association. Miller is one of five players on the District 4 team. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or better.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled north on I-79 to play Division II Edinboro University on Friday afternoon. The Tartans dropped a 70-59 contest to the Fighting Scots in the final game of the 2021 spring season.

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team hosted the Lions of Penn State-Altoona Wednesday afternoon at Skibo Gymnasium. All 12 Tartans that played scored, as the Cardinal and Gray defeated the Lions 89-54.
Tartans Drop 84-74 Overtime Contest to Hiram

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team hosted the Terriers of Hiram College Sunday afternoon. The Tartans never trailed throughout regulation, but then were outscored 13-3 in overtime to dropped an 84-74 decision.
Oberman Sinks Seven Triples in Tartans 93-80 Win at Hiram

Sophomore Sean Oberman (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored a career-high 26 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor, while connecting on all seven triples taken to lead the Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team to a 93-80 victory at Hiram College Friday evening. Oberman’s seven three-point baskets made was the most in a single-game for the Tartans since A.J. Straub made a school record eight at Skidmore on December 9, 2005.

A day after hosting Pitt-Greensburg, the Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team traveled to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, for a rematch against the Bobcats. The Tartans high-powered offense again outlasted the Bobcats winning 94-76.
Tartans Win Overtime Shootout Over Pitt-Greensburg, 107-100

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team returned to the court for the first time since last February and defeated the Bobcats of Pitt-Greensburg Saturday, 107-100, in overtime. The exhibition contest was played on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium and saw a driving layup by senior Zach Watson (Dublin, Ohio / Jerome) as time expired in regulation fall through the net to send the contest to overtime.

Men's Basketball Alum Matt Loebbaka Uses Personal Story To ‘Be The Match’

Bill Loebbaka was a fixture in Skibo Gymnasium when his son Matt was playing basketball for the Tartans from 2011-15. Despite the distance from Chicago, Bill and his wife Sue regularly made the trek to Pittsburgh for University Athletic Association (UAA) weekends and were beloved by fellow parents, players, coaches and staff. Bill was a positive force, always believing his Tartans would pull out a big victory in the waning seconds.

Thirty-Four Tartans Honored as Top Academic Athletes

Although the traditional fall and winter seasons haven’t been on display for Carnegie Mellon University this year, the excellence of the university’s student-athletes is still impacting the entire community. Each winter for the past six years, the CMU Department of Athletics has celebrated its top academic athletes at the Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Celebration during finals week. And while an in-person celebration is on hold for now, the highest-performing junior and senior student-athletes in each undergraduate college and on each team are still being recognized for their academic performance.

The University Athletic Association (UAA) Presidents Council has unanimously approved a resolution to cancel all formal UAA winter sport competition for the 2020-21 season. Carnegie Mellon University is one of eight institutions that form the UAA along with Brandeis University, Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, New York University, University of Rochester, University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis.
