(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted La Roche University on Monday night and defeated the Redhawks 80-57 on the hardwood at Wiegand Gymnasium. Carnegie Mellon is now 7-4 with La Roche moving to 5-6.
For the fifth time this season, Carnegie Mellon shot over 50.0% from the floor and remained unbeaten when doing so, as the Tartans shot 50.7% to the Redhawks 31.7%.
The Tartans had three score in double figures with junior Nick Nakasian (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) leading with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Junior Kevin Sax (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) registered 15 points and freshman Nolan Casey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Packer Collegiate School) scored a career-high 12 in the win while also hauling down a career-best seven rebounds. Nakasian and sophomore R.J. Holmes (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai Stevenson) also grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Tartans.
Carnegie Mellon held a one-point lead, 24-23, with 6:49 to play in the first half before the home team went on a 17-5 run. Sophomore Jack Stone (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) closed the first twenty minutes of play with a triple from the top of the arc to make the score 41-28.
The Cardinal and Gray led by double-digits for most of the second half and used yet another 17-5 run to take a 68-47 lead midway through the frame. Five different Tartans contributed the scoring during the run with Stone ending once again, but this time on a driving layup. The Tartans lead never dipped below 16 points the rest of the game before wining 80-57.
The Tartans will play NYU on Sunday, January 16. Tip is set for 12:00 p.m. and will be played at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, N.Y.
