Stone Leads Tartans with 17 Points in Setback to Brandeis

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted Brandeis University for a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Wednesday and dropped a 66-44 contest. The Cardinal and Gray move to 11-12 overall and 4-9 in UAA play while Brandeis is now 13-9, 4-7.

The Tartans were held to 30.0% shooting from the floor while Brandeis shot 48.2% and converted 9-of-14 three-point buckets in the second half to end the game shooting 45.8% from long range. Sophomore Jack Stone (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) led the Tartans with 17 points with junior Kevin Sax (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) leading the way on the glass with a career-high 13 rebounds.

Brandeis had three score in double figures with Collin Sawyer and Dylan Lien each scoring 12 while Toby Harris finish with 11.

Carnegie Mellon took a10-6 lead with 12:54 to play in the first half following a triple by Stone. The basket proved to be the last for the Tartans over the next 10:38, as Brandeis scored 15 straight and grabbed a 21-10 advantage. The Tartans then scored eight of the final 10 points of the half and trailed 23-18 at the break.

Early in the second frame, Brandeis scored nine straight points and built a 39-24 lead with 14:06 to play. The Judges continued to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 31 (63-32) before going on for the 66-44 victory.

The Tartans will close their regular season on Saturday, February 26, with a 2:00 p.m. tip in Cleveland, Ohio, against the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University.
