David Sloan Promoted to Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University Assistant Men's Basketball Coach David Sloan has been promoted to Associate Head Coach for the start of the 2022-23 Tartan season. Sloan, who will begin his fifth year with the program, also serves as the Tartans' recruiting coordinator.

"I am delighted that we could extend this well-earned promotion to David," said head men's basketball coach Tony Wingen. "For the past four years, Coach Sloan has been increasingly more involved with every aspect of our basketball program. His teaching, recruiting, advising and planning have made him an asset to the entire athletics department, but especially to men's basketball."

Over the last four seasons with the Tartans, Sloan has recruited the 2021-22 University Athletic Association (UAA) Sophomore Rookie of the Year in R.J. Holmes while also coaching six players to All-UAA recognition throughout his time on the Cardinal and Gray staff. During the 2019-20 campaign, the veteran coach mentored post-player Trent Suddeth who led the UAA in rebounding and guard Colin McNeil who led the nation in assists per game.

Besides coaching, Sloan holds other responsibilities for the athletics department. He is part of the event management team, an advisor for Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), instructor for physical education classes and serves on the Athletics Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and the athletics website redesign committees.

Sloan came to Carnegie Mellon from Maine Maritime Academy, where he served as the top men's assistant coach and head recruiter for two seasons. During his time at Maine Maritime, Sloan coached two 1,000-point scorers and the first player in program history to record a triple-double.

Prior to coaching the Mariners, he served as assistant coach at Boyertown Area High School in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. In addition, Sloan has coached at numerous camps, including the Tom Izzo Basketball Camp at Michigan State University, Hoop Group Academic Elite camps, All-Academic Basketball camps and the Jack McCloskey Basketball Camp at Alvernia University, of which he was also a co-director.

Sloan is a 2014 graduate of Alvernia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training. While at Alvernia he appeared in 27 games for the Wolves basketball team and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He continued his education at Alvernia and served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer before earning his master's in business administration in May of 2016.
