Tartans Get Tripped Up at Geneva, 52-49
(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania for a no-conference showdown with the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College and dropped a 52-49 contest.

How it Happened
- Midway through the first half the score stood at 9-7 in favor of Geneva as both teams had trouble getting it going. Over the first 10 minutes of play, Carnegie Mellon converted 3-of-18 from the floor, while Geneva converted 3-of-15.
- The poor shooting continued over the final 10 minutes of the first half while the Tartans shot 22.2% (8-36) for the half with the Golden Tornadoes shooting 26.7% (8-30).
- The Tartans grabbed their first lead of the game at 20-18 on a made layup by junior R.J. Holmes with 45 ticks on the clock in the first half. A made free throw by Geneva's Mark Rachic 19 seconds later and then a fastbreak layup by Rachic as time expired in the half gave the Golden Tornadoes a 21-20 advantage at the break.
- Over a four-minute stretch, Geneva used a 14-2 run to take a 41-28 lead with 7:22 to play in the contest.
- With the Golden Tornadoes leading 43-30, Carnegie Mellon scored six straight points to cut the deficit to 43-36 with 4:47 to play.
- A minute later, Carnegie Mellon used a 10-1 run over a three-minute stretch to pull within a possession at 48-46 with 46 seconds on the clock. A pair of free throws by Lyle Tipton pushed the home teams lead back to a two-possession contest.
- With 6.6 seconds remaining in the game, junior Jack Stone connected on the Tartans first triple of the contest to pull the Cardinal and Gray to within a point at 50-49.
- Geneva's Isaac Massie then converted a pair of free throws, but the Tartans had a last shot to send the game into overtime. A three-point attempt by Stone hit off the front off the iron and bounced to the floor to give the home team the victory.
Tartan Stats
- The Tartans ended the game shooting 27.3% (18-66) from the floor and converted 1-of-29 from behind the arc.
- Freshman Justin Allen led the Tartans with 14 points while Stone ended the game with 10 points.
- Holmes led all players with 11 rebounds.
Golden Tornado Stats
- Geneva ended the came shooting 34.6% (19-55) from the floor and converted 2-of-21 from behind the arc.
- Lyle Tipton led Geneva with 20 points while Mark Rachic finished with 10.
- Ryan Rachic led the Golden Tornadoes with 10 rebounds.
Game Notes
- For the second straight game Carnegie Mellon was held without a three-point bucket in the first half of play.
- The Tartans outrebounded their seventh opponent this season in eight contests holding a 47-41 advantage over the Golden Tornadoes.
