Tartans Tripped Up at #22 WashU

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday afternoon with an 81-57 loss at the 22nd-ranked Bears of Washington University in St. Louis.

How it Happened

  • The Bears converted their first four shots of the game and led 9-0 before the Tartans even attempted a field goal.
  • WashU continued to have the hot hand and went on to make its first seven shots taking a 16-4 with 15:27 to play in the half.
  • Carnegie Mellon's shooting also started strong converting 4-of-5 as the lead was cut to 16-10 at the 13:50 mark following a pair of made free throws by sophomore Aidan Booher.
  • Midway through the first half, WashU used an 11-4 run over a five-minute stretch and took its largest lead of the first twenty minutes at 30-17.
  • The Tartans responded with a 14-2 run over the next three minutes to pull within a point at 32-31 with three minutes left on the clock. During the run, freshman Buckley DeJardin scored seven of his 13 first half points while the Cardinal and Gray went 5-of-5 from the floor, converting two from behind the arc.
  • WashU then closed the half scoring nine of the final 11 points and led 41-33 heading into the locker room.
  • Carnegie Mellon shot 63.2% (12-19) from the floor over the first twenty minutes, but WashU turned the Tartans nine turnovers into 21 points and shot 53.1% (17-32) from the floor.
  • The Bears run poured into the second half, as it was extended to 14-2 and the Bears led 46-33 two minutes into the second half.
  • Three minutes later, WashU grabbed a 54-39 following a triple by Will Grudzinski.
  • Back-to-back long balls by DeJardin and then classmate Aidan Murphy cut the home teams lead back to single digits at 54-45.
  • The Bears lead was pushed back to double digits in the midst of a 21-1 run where Charlie Jacob connected on two from behind the arc and accounted for 10 of the points to push the WashU lead to 77-49 with 4:10 left in regulation.

Tartan Stats

  • Carnegie Mellon had 11 different players score while 37 of its points came off the bench.
  • DeJardin was the lone Tartan to score in double figures, ending with 16 points on 7-of-9 from the floor.
  • Senior Nick Nakasian finished with seven points.
  • Booher led the Cardinal and Gray with a career-high four assists.

Bears Stats

  • Drake Kindsvater led four Bears in double figures with 23 points. He also led all players with 10 rebounds.
  • Jacob along with Hayden Doyle finished with 16 points while Kevin Davet ended with 10.
  • Yogi Oliff and Doyle each handed out six assists.

Game Notes

  • It marked DeJardin's fourth game this season scoring in double figures.
  • Carnegie Mellon is now 3-5 against ranked opponents this season.
