Golf Team Leads Division III in Classroom For 2013-14 Season

The Carnegie Mellon University golf team was awarded top academic honors for Division III when the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced its winners for the 2013-14 academic year presented by Farmers Insurance. The Tartans finished the year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.70, as five players turned in 4.0’s. This marks the second time the Tartans have claimed the top honor for Division III, as they placed first with a 3.62 GPA in 2009-10.

Three Carnegie Mellon University athletes have been honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team for both the men and the women with two being honored for the second straight year. Senior tennis athlete Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) is joined by senior golfer Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) on the first team while sophomore Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) found a spot on the second team.

Three Tartans were inducted into Carnegie Mellon University’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa earlier this month. Women's tennis player Katie Cecil, women’s track and field hurdler Kelsey Hallinen and men’s golfer Ian Bangor were selected to the nation's most prestigious undergraduate academic honor society.

Carnegie Mellon University Director of Athletics Josh Centor has named Nick Dunn head men’s golf coach. Dunn will replace 29-year veteran Rich Erdelyi, who announced his retirement in the fall to take place at the conclusion of this season. Dunn will also serve as the assistant women’s golf coach which will play on the varsity level starting in the fall of 2014. Dunn will officially start his duties at the beginning of the fall season.

For the third straight season Carnegie Mellon University senior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy), a member of men's golf, was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team. CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition with the official sponsor of Capital One.

Two Carnegie Mellon University men’s golfers have been recognized for their play on the course his past season. Senior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and freshman George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) were both named to the 2014 PING Mid-Atlantic Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. This marks Bangor’s fourth straight season accomplishing the honor. The senior also was named a Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for the second straight season while Qian was named to the All-Freshman Team given to the top first-year golfer in each of the six regions.

The Carnegie Mellon University golf team competed in the one-day, 36-hole, Vulcan Invitational hosted by California University of Pennsylvania at the Cedarbrook Golf Course, Saturday, April 19. The Tartans carded team scores of 318 and 301 to finish second out of seven teams with a 619.

At the final day of the Edward Jones Shootout Sunday, April 13, the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team shot a 301 on day two to place third. The Tartans ended the 36-hole event with a team score of 599. Allegheny won the two-day event that was held at the par-70, The Links @ Spring Church in Apollo, Pa. with a team score of 591.

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team hosted the first day of the annual Edward Jones Shootout Saturday, April 12 at The Links @ Spring Church in Apollo, Pa. The Tartans are currently in second-place after play on Saturday, as they fired a team score of 298 on the par-70 course.

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team competed in the final round of The Hershey Cup on Monday, April 7 and finished with a 36-hole total of 632 (313-319) to place sixth out of 15 teams. The two-day event hosted by the University of Rochester was played on the par-71, East Course at Hershey Country Club.

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s golf team currently is tied for seventh-place at the 15-team Hershey Cup after play on Sunday, April 6. The Tartans fired a team score of 313 on the par-71, East Course at Hershey Country Club Sunday afternoon. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being hosted by the University of Rochester.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team finished 22nd out of 30 teams at the 15th Annual Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational Sunday, March 16. The three-day, 54-hole event was held at the par-72 Pine Lakes Course on Jekyll Island. The Tartans finished with a 54-hole team score of 920 after carding a 315 Sunday afternoon.

The Tartans are currently in 16th place after 36-holes of play with a two-round total of 605 (303-302). The three-day event is being played on the 6,700-yard, par-72 Pine Lakes Course on Jekyll Island.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team currently is tied for 14th with Skidmore College following the first round of the 15th Annual Jekyll Collegiate Invitational played on Friday, March 14. The Tartans turned in a team score of 303 in a field of 30 teams which includes seven of the nation’s top 10 teams in Division III. The three-day, 54-hole event is being held at the par-72 Pine Lakes Course on Jekyll Island.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team placed third at the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Monday, March 10. The Tartans carded a final round team score of 293 after carding a 302 in the opening round Sunday to finish with a 36-hole total of 595. Carnegie Mellon hosted the two-day event at the Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, Florida.
