Tartans Tied at Top of Leaderboard Following Opening Round of Jekyll Island Collegiate

(JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team competed in the first round of the Jekyll Collegiate Invitational on Friday. The Tartans carded a team score of nine-under par 279, second lowest single-round team score in program history, and currently are tied for the top spot in a field comprised of 30 teams. The three-day, 54-hole event is being held on the 6,700-yard, par-72 Pine Lakes Course on Jekyll Island.

Freshman Justin Chan (London, United Kingdom) carded a collegiate-low round of four-under par 68 on Friday to lead the Tartans. Chan is currently tied for second individually in a field of 150 golfers.

Senior William Knauth (Williamsport, Pa. / Williamsport Area) and sophomore Brian Xu (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) each fired rounds of two-under par 70. It marked a career-best round for Xu. Seniors Joshua Lim (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) and Jason Folker (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) also ended the day under par with rounds of 71.

The second round of the event will be held Saturday, March 19, with the Tartans teeing off at 12:55 p.m.
