(NICHOLASVILLE, Ky.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team opened play at the first round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships on Tuesday in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The Tartans played their opening round on the Champion Trace Course at the Keene Trace Golf Club while carding a 292 and are currently tied for 10th.

How it Happened:

  • An even round of golf by sophomore Justin Chan led the Tartans in the opening round. Chan is tied for 24th individually in a field of 221 golfers.
  • Graduate student Henry Scavone and freshman David Zhang both entered the clubhouse with a one-over par 73 on Tuesday.
  • Junior Brian Xu shot a two-over par 74.
  • Freshman Andrew Wang sits a stroke back from Xu after carding a three-over 75.

Up Next:

  • Play resumes Wednesday, May 17, as the Tartans will play the Keene Run Course. A shotgun start is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. Following Thursday's round, the field will be cut to 18 teams and the top six individuals. The final two days of action will take place on the Champion Trace Course.
